New AI Tool Assists Teachers in Marking Geography Essays, Expands to English and Social Studies
Singapore's Education Ministry has developed an AI tool called Markly to help teachers provide detailed feedback on geography essays, with plans to expand to English, history, and social studies. Teachers train the tool with sample scripts, allowing it to provide feedback in their style, though all suggestions are reviewed before sharing with students. The tool significantly reduces marking time, enabling multiple feedback rounds within weeks instead of a full term. While AI assists with grading, teachers emphasize the continued importance of human guidance to help students understand feedback and critically evaluate AI-generated content. The ministry is currently piloting Markly in select schools and will assess its effectiveness before wider implementation.
